About Depeche Mode

The beginnings of Depeche Mode can be traced back to a number of bands formed in the late 1970s including No Romance in China, The Plan, Norman and the the Worms, and The French Look, all of which included one of more of the members that would eventually come to found Depeche Mode. However, the band's direct descendent was called Composition of Sound, formed in 1979 by Vince Clark, Andrew Fletcher, and Martin Gore. Shortly after forming the band, they recruited Dave Gahan, shed every instrument except their synthesizers, and renamed themselves Depeche Mode. After releasing three successful singles, "Dreaming of Me," "New Life," and "Just Can't Get Enough," the band released its debut album Speak & Spell in 1981, which reached number 10 on the UK's BPI chart. According to Jonathan Miller's biography The True Story of Depeche Mode, Clarke left the band after the release of the album and was replaced by Alan Wilder, while Gore took up writing responsibilities.

Despite the loss of Clarke, Depeche Mode prevailed and released A Broken Frame in 1982 to a number eight peak charting. The album spawned two singles, including the top ten hit "See You." The next album, Construction Time Again improved the band's popularity more, and the 1984 release of Some Great Reward gave the band commercial success on both sides of the Atlantic for the first time. It spawned the highly popular single "People Are People". For the rest of the 1980s, the quartet would see varying levels of reception to their work. Everything would change at the end of the decade with the Music for the Masses tour when the final show at the Pasadena Rose Bowl drew a crowd of over 60,000. The rise of alternative music around the same time made a smash success of their seventh album, Violator. It was the band's first album to receive multi-platinum status, selling over three million copies in the United States, according to the RIAA. The following album, Songs of Faith and Devotion, gave them their first number one charting album in the United States.

The subsequent World Violation tour saw a number of sold out performances, including 40,000 at the Giants Stadium in New Jersey and Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The rest of the 1990s saw ups and downs for Depeche Mode. In 1995, Wilder left the group after 13 years, and Gahan faced heroin addiction, eventually entering a rehabilitation facility after a suicide attempt. After a four year hiatus in recording, the band came back with Ultra in 1997, which have a second number one hit in the U.S. This began an era in which the band would take hiatuses after each album, though they would continue touring. For example, their 1998 The Singles 86>98 tour took Depeche Mode to 18 countries. The first half decade of the 21st century has seen moderate successes in the form of 2001's Exciter, which has charted at number nine in the U.S. and eight in the U.K. and 2005's Playing the Angel, which charted at number six and seven respectively. In 2006, the band headlined at Coachella and in 2007 they announced that they would be heading back to the studio for the recording of their twelveth studio album Sounds of the Universe.
