Detroit Tigers - History
The beginning of the Detroit Tigers franchise was needless to say, historic. On April 25, 1901, the Detroit Tigers took the field for the first time at Bennett Field to square off against Milwaukee. As the innings past, the Detroit Tigers began to fall further and further behind and as the teams headed into the bottom of the ninth, the Detroit Tigers were trailing 13-4. In front of 10,000 fans that bought Detroit Tigers tickets that day, the team began to chip away at the lead. After they cut the lead down to one, Frank Dillon stepped up to the plate with two men on and won the game with two run double to win it 14-13. Talk about a way to start off your franchise.
Now over a century later, the Detroit Tigers are one of the most historic franchises in baseball. Twenty players, who at some point in the careers put on the Detroit Tigers uniform, are now enshrined in Cooperstown at the Baseball Hall of Fame. Among those great Detroit Tigers are Al Kaline, Hank Greenberg and Hal Newhouser. But maybe the most historic player and figure in Detroit Tigers history was the legendary Ty Cobb. Cobb played 21 seasons in Detroit, putting up a career batting average of .367 with three seasons hitting over .400. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.
The Detroit Tigers have seen many great ball players play in the Tigers uniform and has seen many great teams. They have reached Major League Baseball's fall classic ten times from their inception until 2007. Their latest was in 2006 when they faced Albert Pujols and the St. Louis Cardinals, and although they lost that series, the Detroit Tigers are still four time world champions. They won the World Series in 1935, 1945, 1968 and 1984.
