Although he didn't have much success at first in finding someone interested in his music — his independent debut album Don't Leave Me in Love (2001) not gaining any traction — by 2003 Dierks Bentley, then a researcher at the Tennessee Television Network, got a break when Capitol Nashville signed him and released his first self-titled major label record. Driven by debut single "What Was I Thinkin'," this effort was a much bigger success than the first, and he found his break.

Bentley followed up with Modern Day Drifter (2005), whose three singles — "Lot of Leavin' to Do," "Come a Little Closer," and "Settle for a Slowdown" all did well. In 2006, Bentley won the CMA's Best New Artist (then the Horizon) award, and joined the Grand Ole Opry. Subquent albums such as Long Trip Alone (2006), Feel That Fire (2009), Up the Ridge (2010), Home (2012), and Riser (2014) all met with various levels of commercial success.
