Doobie Brothers - Resources

About the Doobie Brothers

The Doobie Brothers were founded in 1969 when singer and guitarist Tom Johnston and drummer John Hartman were introduced. The two formed the band Pud and performed around the San Jose area, experimenting with different sounds and line-ups. Over time the band started to find members that fit their style and decided to revamp their name and change it to the Doobie Brothers in 1970. They recorded their self-titled debut album in 1971, but the album received little fanfare and failed to land on the charts. Their sophomore effort, Toulouse Street (1972), featured a more eclectic mix of songs. The album was the launching point for the band, as it reached the Top 25 on the charts and was certified platinum in the US. They followed up Toulouse Street with two more platinum selling albums, The Captain and Me (1973) and What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits (1974).

In the following years, the Doobie Brothers would be forced to make line-up changes. One of the changes they made came in 1975, when lead singer Tom Johnston was forced to temporarily leave the band with a medical condition and was replaced by singer Michael McDonald. While the Doobie Brothers' first album with McDonald was not as successful as its predecessors, the second, 1976's Takin' It to the Streets, changed the band's sound from country to jazz, which proved to be a successful change. The album went to the Top 10 and was certified platinum.

Over the more than thirty years after Takin' It to the Streets was released, the Doobie Brothers have been able to release more top selling albums, including the platinum selling Minute by Minute (1978) and One Step Closer (1980).
