In January 2016, Dream Theater released their thirteenth studio album, The Astonishing. Released as a double album, The Astonishing contains a total of 34 tracks and is labeled as a concept album, centering around a band of rebels who are trying to defeat an oppressive empire. The album’s first single, “The Gift of Music” was released on December 3, 2015.
Also in December 2015, Dream Theater announced they will embark on a North American tour in 2016. Titled “The Astonishing Live” tour, the 16-date circuit will kick off on April 15 at Centre Bell in Montreal. Making its way down the East Coast, Dream Theater will stop at venues such as Radio City Music Hall in New York City, and Orpheum Theatre in Boston, before making their way out west. Dream Theater was formed in 1985 by guitarist John Petrucci, bassist John Myung, and drummer Mike Portnoy while the three were attending Berklee College of Music in Boston. Formed under the name Majesty, the trio eventually dropped out of school to concentrate on music.
After recruiting Kevin Moore to play keyboard and Chris Collins as the lead vocalist, Dream Theater began performing at venues around the New York Tri-state area. Around the same time, the band recorded and released a collection of demos, titled The Majesty Demos. The set of tapes became popular throughout the progressive metal community. Although they still were not very popular on the mainstream music scene at this point, thanks to a heavy following, many people were looking to buy Dream Theater tickets.
After the firing of Collins, the hiring of Charlie Dominici, and a name change to Dream Theater after a legal issue, the band signed a contract with Mechanic Records in 1989. Dream Theater released their debut album, When Dream and Day Unite in 1989. Containing the singles "Status Seeker" and "Afterlife," the album received three out of five stars from AllMusic. Dream Theater’s most popular album would be their sophomore effort, Images and Words, which received a gold certification by the RIAA.
Since the band’s formation, the only two members who have been with the band since 1985 are Petrucci and Myung. Along with the aforementioned members, today, Dream Theater consists of James LaBrie as the lead vocalist, Jordan Rudess on keyboards, and Mike Mangini on drums. Dream Theater has gone on to release a total of 13 albums, most recently The Astonishing.
