Eddie Izzard was born on February 7, 1962, in Aden, Yemen. His parents, both English, moved to the country while his father worked as an accountant for British Petroleum. Only months after his birth, Eddie Izzard and his parents moved back to Britain. It was there that Izzard found comedy, unfortunately through tragedy. At the young age of six, his mother Dorothy passed away after a battle with cancer. He was able to find comfort in watching comedians like Steve Martin, Richard Pryor and the works of Monty Python. It was his love of comedy that pushed Eddie Izzard into a career in standup.
After leaving college, Eddie Izzard began to make a name for himself by performing at the Comedy Store in London. He would continue to make strides as a comedian and began to receive accolades for his work at the British Comedy Awards in 1993 and 1996. A star in Europe, Izzard officially crossed the pond in 1999 when his standup concert special Dressed to Kill premiered on HBO. The show received two Emmy Awards in 2000 and put Eddie Izzard on the map.
Eddie Izzard has gone on to be a star beyond the comedy stage. He has appeared in the movies Aristocrats (2005), My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006) and The Avengers (1998). He has also appeared on television in shows like Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Tales From the Crypt and The Riches on FX, which has earned Izzard critical praise.
