One of the most successful musicians ever, Elton John has had a tremendous impact on music, popular culture and fashion. Wearing flashy costumes and oversized glasses, John hit the music scene in the seventies and hasn’t looked back. His songs are all over the radio, television and movies, his influence can be seen in nearly all artists and Elton tickets are a virtual lock to sell out.
Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in London, England, on March 25, 1947. He has always had incredible talent in music, taking piano lessons at the age of seven and turning those lessons into a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music four years later. Over the next few years, John honed his skills as a pianist as well as a lyricist, and in 1967 he responded to an ad for Liberty Records. It was then that he met lyricist Bernie Taupin, and the two struck up a partnership that launched John's career.
Each of the first three albums that John released in the U.S., Elton John (1970), Tumbleweed Connection (1970) and Madman Across the Water (1971), all charted in the Top 10. Over the course of his career, John has produced a string of hits, including "Tiny Dancer," "Benny and the Jets," "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word," and "Rocket Man."
John has also contributed to film and theater. In 1994, he collaborated with Tim Rice to produce much of the soundtrack for the 1994 Disney classic Lion King and its musical counterpart. He also produced the music for Billy Elliot, Lestat, and Aida.
Now forty years and over 250 million albums sold later, Elton John can safely say he is a rock legend and will be remembered for years to come. John has won five Grammy Awards over his career, including two awards for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
