About Equus

Equus is the story of a psychiatrist who has the task of attempting to treat a young man who has an unusual fascination with horses. The play, written by Peter Shaffer, delves into the mind of Alan Strang, who appears to be a normal 17-year-old boy but has had anything but a normal past. His passion for horses has led to awkward encounters with a female stablehand and has officially scarred his mind. No one knows quite what to do, except child psychiatrist Dr. Martin Dysart who may hold the key for the young man. By the end of Equus, Dr. Dysart seems like the only one who can solve the complicated puzzle.

In addition to the theatre, Equus was adapted to the screen in 1977. Starring the likes of Richard Burton, Peter Firth and Eileen Atkins, Equus quickly became a critical success. The movie ended up being nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Best Writing. While only nominated at the Oscars, Burton and Firth were able to capture Golden Globe wins for their roles.
