The millennium saw many newcomers to the music scene, and one of the huge success stories is Fall Out Boy. The band was named by a fan at one of their very first concerts; Fall Out Boy is the name of a character from the popular FOX cartoon, The Simpsons. In fact, Fall Out Boy recorded their own version of The Simpsons theme song, which is featured on the show's official website and was played after a January 2009 episode. Being internationally famous and being featured on a cartoon that has been popular for 20 years is proof of the long way that FOB has come. The band is from Wilmette, Illinois, which is just outside of Chicago. When the band was forming, Joe Trohman and Pete Wentz were already close friends. The two met then-high school student Patrick Stump, and he auditioned for the role of drummer. It soon became clear that Stump's true gift was his voice, and he became lead singer. In 2003, FOB released their debut album called Fall Out Boy's Evening Out With Your Girlfriend, a mini-LP with only nine tracks. The band's first album was released by Uprising Records, but FOB signed with Fueled By Ramen later in 2003 and released their first full-length album that same year called Take This to Your Grave. The band released an acoustic recording in 2004 called My Heart Will Always Be the B-Side to My Tongue, and it resulted in Fall Out Boy's first break onto the Billboard charts.

Fall Out Boy signed with major music label Island Records, and their major label debut was a huge success. From Under the Cork Tree was released in 2005, and the singles "Sugar, We're Goin' Down," "Dance, Dance," and "A Little Less Sixteen Candles, a Little More 'Touch Me'" were incredibly popular. Cork Tree's singles received a lot of air play, including long stints on MTV's TRL, and the album won FOB their first ever Grammy Award nomination for "Best New Artist." Following the album's release, Fall Out Boy concerts were consistently sold out, with Fall Out Boy tickets being hard to find. The band's fourth studio album, Infinity On High, garnered a great deal of critical praise, and FOB fans loved the sound. Singles "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race" and "Thnks fr th Mmrs" both received a lot of air play on the radio and on MTV and VH1 stations.

In August 2008, Fall Out Boy went viral to promote their upcoming album. An elaborate combination of internet conspiracy (featuring "Citizens For Our Betterment"), "candid" photos, and cryptic blog posts added up to a huge amount of internet buzz in the FOB fandom. Fans theorized that all of the mysterious internet messages and photos were leading up to the announcement of FOB's new album, a new tour, or may just have been related to the political campaign raging in 2008. Though an album wasn't released on November 4th as some fans had conjectured, Fall Out Boy did perform with Kanye West and Kid Rock at the Inaugural Youth Ball in honor of President Barack Obama. Rather, Folie à Deux was released in December 2008, and it has lived up to all the hype. Folie à Deux (meaning literally "a madness shared by two") features collaboration between FOB and other artists like Lil Wayne, Debby Harry (of Blondie), and Elvis Costello. The two singles "I Don't Care" and "America's Suitehearts" were hits on the radio.
