Based on an 1894 story by the Yiddish writer Sholem Aleichem, the first big production of Fiddler on the Roof opened in 1964 at the Imperial Theatre. With music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and a book by Joseph Stein, the production starred Zero Mostel and Maria Karnilova, and a young Bette Midler played Tzeitel on some days. Set in Russia in 1905, the musical takes place during the Russian revolution in a small Jewish village called Anatevka. Along with his wife Golde, Tevye the dairy worker believes in tradition.
Tevye prepares to find husbands for his five daughters, but they have other ideas. Tzeitel, his oldest child, wants to marry a tailor named Motel Kamzoil. To make matters worse, Hodel and Chava also ignore Yente the Matchmaker. But this may be the least of their problems as pogroms and the Tsar threaten the Jews. With the show on tour, you can find a wide selection of cheap Fiddler on the Roof tickets on TicketNetwork.
