About Flogging Molly

The singer and songwriter of Flogging Molly, Dave King, describes the band he created as one that is not traditional. He says that they are "influenced by traditional music and inspired by it, and we put our own little twist on it." What they have become is an Irish American punk band that has a sound that is unique to anything that people have heard before. Their rise to fame came as audiences felt the energy and excitement that fills any room where Flogging Molly is playing. When you buy tickets to see Flogging Molly perform, you receive an experience like no other.

Dave King created Flogging Molly in 1997 without a true direction of where the music and sound were going. They got their start and their name as they played at a Los Angeles bar named Molly Malone's where they played once a week as they grew together as a band. Their name was given to them in honor of the bar that was so faithful to them when they were an up-and-coming band.

Flogging Molly is comprised of seven members, all with different roles that give the band its Irish punk sound. There is Dave King, who along with lead vocals also adds acoustic guitar and banjo. Bridget Regan plays the fiddle and tin whistle, along with back up vocals. Part of any punk band is the electric guitar, with Dennis Casey filling the role. Just the opposite, and perhaps the most unique member of Flogging Molly, is Matt Hensley, who lends his talents on the accordion. The rest of the band consists of Nathan Maxwell on bass, George Schwindt on drums and Robert Schmidt on mandolin and banjo.

Their first album was released in 1997 under the title Alive Behind the Green Door, which is a live album that was recorded at Molly Malone's. The album was released independently, but after a music executive saw their live show, Flogging Molly signed with Side One Dummy records. Under that label they have released four studio albums, Swagger (2000), Drunken Lullabies (2002), Within a Mile of Home (2004) and Float (2008).
