Florence and the Machine is an English indie pop group consisting of lead vocalist Florence Welch, keyboardist Isabella Summers, and a variety of other musicians. After forming in 2007, the group released their first album, Lungs in 2009, which immediately climbed to the number 2 spot on the UK charts. The group soon found an audience in the United States after their single "Dogs Days are Over" was performed at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.
Following the extensive first Florence and the Machine tour, which lasted for almost three years, the band got back to work in the studio on their next album. Ceremonials was released in October of 2011 to a mostly positive critical reception.
In 2015, Florence and the Machine released their third studio album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful. The album, which was rated 76/100 on Metacritic and was given four out of five stars by Billboard produced singles “What Kind of Man,” “St. Jude,” “Ship to Wreck,” and “Deliah.” The same year, Florence and the Machine is putting on performances at various music festivals, including Lollapalooza and the Austin City Limits Music Festival. In the fall, the band will embark on a brief North American tour in support of How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful.
Welch is known for her unique fashion style as much as her music, and often wears clothes from second-hand stores that mimic the styles of Stevie Nicks. Welch has also stated that she finds inspiration from Kate Bush, Bjork, and PJ Harvey. Florence and the Machine has been nominated for a number of awards.
