Formed in 2008 following the break up of The Format, Fun. was organized by Nate Ruess, who recruited Jack Antonoff of Steel Train and Andrew Dost, once a member of Anathallo. The new band got right to work on their first album and in August 2009 released Aim and Ignite to mostly positive reviews. Throughout 2010 Fun. went on tour, supporting Jack's Mannequin and Paramore.

Over the course of the next year, the band worked on its second album. In the meantime, they produced a single, "C'mon," with Panic! at the Disco. Later in the year, Fun. teased the new album by releasing "We Are Young," a single featuring R&B singer Janelle Monae. The song was the breakthrough hit for Fun. after a cover by the cast of TV show Glee gained popularity. To date, the single has sold 7 million units.

The second album, Some Nights was released in February 2012, and enjoyed massive commercial success, partly in thanks to "We Are Young." Shortly after, the band embarked on their first headlining tour, including several festival appearances. In June 2012, the album's second, title single was released. Though only a moderate hit at first, the single was boosted into the Top 10 of the Billboard 100 in September 2012, making it the second Fun. song to do so in less than a year. In February 2013, Fun. won Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Song of the Year for "We Are Young."
