After attending the prestigious college for only a year, he decided to attempt to make it as singer in New York City. It was under the tutelage of Davis that Gavin DeGraw released his debut studio album Chariot (2003).

Chariot proved to be a successful album for Gavin DeGraw selling over a million copies in the US and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. It feature the hit singles 'Follow Through', 'Chariot' and 'I Don't Want to Be'. The single 'I Don't Want to Be' proved to be the most successful off the album peaking at #10 on the Billboard chart. It also landed Gavin DeGraw a Billboard Music Award nomination and a Radio Music Award nomination in 2005. As a follow-up, he released a live acoustic version of the album that reached #56 on the charts.
