Created by Clifford Odets, this Broadway revival of Golden Boy celebrates the production's 75th anniversary.Set in the depths of America's Great Depression, Golden Boy was created as a play in 1937. Two years later, it was made into a film, which served as the basis for the 1964 musical version.
Among a cast of 19, Seth Numrich (War Horse) plays lead character Joe Bonaparte; Tony Shaloub (USA's "Monk") is Joe’s father; Danny Burstein (South Pacific) is Tokio, Joe’s trainer; and Yvonne Strahovski is Joe’s love interest, Lorna Moon.
Joe Bonaparte dreams of becoming a violinist. At 21, Joe is faced with a difficult choice — continue to struggle financially as he tries to make his dream a reality, or accept a sponsored position as a professional boxer and potentially destroy his hands? It’s not a decision Joe can make on his own, so he seeks the advice of his Italian immigrant father, his manager, Tom, and his girlfriend, Lorna.
A play that contemplates differences between following your heart and earning a living, Joe faces the same dilemma many contemplate each day. Golden Boy tickets give audiences a chance to contemplate the question: are you the violinist or are you the boxer?
