Gym Class Heroes - Resources

About Gym Class Heroes

The Gym Class Heroes formed in 1997 when Travis McCoy met drummer Matt McGinley at their high school in Geneva, New York, and began the band. The band started off playing birthday parties, clubs, festivals, and other small venues. In 2001, guitarist Milo Bonacci and bassist Ryan Giese joined the band, and Gym Class Heroes was officially born.

For several years, the band enjoyed success as an indie band and were interviewed by several online entertainment websites. While still independent, the Gym Class Heroes released …For the Kids in 2001. Afterward, in addition to touring, the band started work on its second album, The Papercut Chronicles. In 2003, Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy invited the band to one of their shows. Soon they were signed to Fall Out Boy member Pete Wentz's Decaydance Records.

At about the same time they were signed, guitarist Milo Bonacci left the band and was replaced with current guitarist Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo. The Gym Class Heroes continued work on the album and released The Papercut EP in late 2004 with four teaser songs. Shortly before the full album's release, bassist Ryan Geise left the band and was replaced by Eric Roberts. The The Papercut Chronicles was released in 2005. After the release, the band went on a long-running tour, playing with such acts as Fall Out Boy, Midtown, and the All-American Rejects as well as participating in the Warped Tour festival.

The Gym Class Heroes released As Cruel as School Children in July 2006. During the summer of 2007, the band opened for Gwen Stefani during her Sweet Escape Tour in Australia and New Zealand and were part of the Young Wild Things tour with Fall Out Boy, Plain White T's, and Cute Is What We Aim For in October 2007. Their next album, The Quilt, was released in 2008, and their upcoming album, The Papercut Chronicles II, was released in late 2011.
