Directed by Diane Paulus and choreographed by Karole Armitage, the revival of HAIR: The American Tribal Love Rock Musical is back on Broadway. After opening in March, the award winning show is currently playing at the Hirschfeld Theatre in New York, NY. With music by Galt MacDermot and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni, the Broadway show stars Gavin Creel as Claude, a young Vietnam War draftee, and Will Swenson as Berger, the hippie leader.
Hair the musical takes place in the 1960's, the Age of Aquarius and the Vietnam War. In the East Village of New York City, a group of young hippies form a Tribe and live in a city park. Symbolizing a typical young man, Claude feels torn between his duty to American Values and the draft board and the way of Peace, Love, and Freedom. Hair brings sun shine and rock music to the Big Apple as the flower children celebrate sexuality, marijuana, and mind expanding drugs.

About Hair the Musical
In 1964, James Rado and Gerome Ragni created Hair, The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical. Dealing with 60's current events like draft dodgers, the Vietnam War, and men with long locks, the show opened Off Broadway after the Summer of Love. Composed by Galt MacDermot, Hair was the first event at the Public Theatre in Greenwich Village, New York City. Initial productions needed work, but a fan named Michael Butler offered to produce the musical play at the Cheetah Discotheque in Manhattan. After revising the script, Ragni and Rado added new Hair songs, and the show debuted on Broadway at the Biltmore Theater in 1968.
The main character, Claude Hooper Bukowski is a confused Aquarius. Caught between the hippie counterculture and traditional values, he asks, "Where Do I Go?" Although Berger encourages him with rock music, Claude hesitates to burn his draft card at the Be-in. Meanwhile, the Tribe uses mind altering drugs and dreams about Margaret Mead, The Supremes, and Abraham Lincoln. Full of controversial issues like the show Rent, Hair explores free love and rebellion through dance, music, and lyrics. Although audiences adored Hair on Broadway, the rock musical offended some people who preferred innocent shows like Mary Poppins. As pacifists, the Tribe rebels against the rat race, the draft, and the Vietnam War. Consumed with free love and drugs, the Tribe sings songs about "Sodomy" and "Hashish", and Woof is in love with Mick Jagger from the Rolling Stones. They give flowers to their enemies, use hallucinogenic drugs like LSD, and let their tresses grow. Although they faced controversies and legal battles over the Hair nude scene, obscenity, and desecrating the American flag, the producers won the fight for free speech.
In 1979, United Artists produced the Hair movie starring Treat Williams, John Savage, and Beverly D'Angelo. An adaptation, the film was choreographed by Twyla Tharp and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award. According to Hairthemusical.com, the "most mysterious part of the hippie world runs through the whole musical HAIR; the mysticism and symbolism of Aquarius". The flower children want to raise social consciousness, change the world, protect the individual from the state, and have an orgy in "The Bed". The original rock musical, Hair led to shows such as Jersey Boys, Grease, Spring Awakening, and Rock of Ages.
