Hands on a Hardbody is based on a 1997 documentary film directed by S. R. Bindler. In Longview, Texas, Bindler followed 24 people involved in a 1995 endurance competition. The documentary won the audience award at for Best Documentary at the 1997 Los Angeles Film Festival.
Hands on a Hardbody first surfaced in 2010 at Princeton University; the entire original cast of 10 will reprise its roles for the show’s stint on Broadway. Commissioned by La Jolla Playhouse, the musical was written by Doug Wright, with music by Amanda Green and Trey Anastasio. Neil Pepe directs.
An endurance competition to win a truck is enough to potentially change the lives of 10 Texans in Hands on a Hardbody. Competitors must see who can keep his or her hands on a truck for the longest period of time without squatting or leaning. Under the sweltering Texas sun, the contestants fight to keep at least one hand on the brand new truck, using hope, ambition, and, of course, humor along the way. Who will you root for?
