About the Harlem Globetrotters

The Harlem Globetrotters exhibition team was formed circa 1926 in Chicago, Illinois and by 1927 were working at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, where they performed exhibition games before dances. An internal dispute nearly disbanded the Savoy Five permanently until Abe Saperstein took charge of the team. With the remaining players, he renamed the team the "New York Harlem Globe Trotters" and set off touring. Two early Globetrotters players, Albert Pullins, and Inman Jackson, brought with them the showboating and dribbling skills for which the team is currently known.

The early Harlem Globetrotters found a modest amount of success in professional basketball. In 1939, they faced up with the other major all-African American team of the time, the New York Rens. Though the Globetrotters lost during that particular game, the next year they came back and won, and then went on to win the World Professional Basketball Tournament against the Chicago Bruins. The team also won a couple times against the then-Minneapolis Lakers, now known as the Los Angeles Lakers.

Despite their early professional successes, the Harlem Globetrotters comedic basketball team has since become the spectacle they're known as today. Much of the Globetrotters' style consists of advanced ball handling techniques mixed with showboating and comedy which results in unique passing, dribbling, and making very difficult shots and the team is perhaps most famous for their fingertip ball spinning. They are also known for coordinating their moves and handling more than one ball at a time. The Globetrotters have signed many professional NBA players to the team up over the year and has most prominently boasted in their lineup the likes of Los Angeles Lakers player Wilt "The Stilt" Chamberlain, Phoenix Suns player Connie Hawkins, and the New York Knicks' Jerome James.

Over the years, the Globetrotters have faced a fierce rival in fellow exhibition team, the Washington Generals, against whom they have a nearly perfect record. The Generals act as a nemesis with an impressive losing record to the Globetrotter's hero with an impressive winning record. Despite this, the Globetrotters have lost to the Generals several times including a 1971 game in Martin, Tennessee where the Generals won by one point. Over the years, the rival team has used a variety of aliases in an attempt to portray themselves as different teams. This rivalry has been referenced in an episode of The Simpsons, where Krusty the Klown bets a significant amount of money on the Generals, stating that he "thought the Generals were due," a reference to the occasional win by the team.

During their seven decade existence, the Harlem Globetrotters have entered popular culture and are a household name. The Globetrotters themselves have appeared in several television shows and movies, including Scooby Doo, The Simpsons, Little Nicky, and The White Shadow. There have also been movies created about the team including The Harlem Globetrotters and Go, Man, Go!.
