Harry Connick Jr Biography

An incredible talent, Harry Connick, Jr. is a singer, actor, pianist, and composer with a humanitarian heart. Connick has enjoyed a long career in music, and he has been with the esteemed Columbia Records label since 1979. In addition to having several of his records go multi-platinum, Harry Connick has also been nominated many times for Tony and Grammy awards for his instrumental and vocal albums, and has won the awards on several occasions over the years. Harry Connick Jr. began branching out into film in 1990, when he played Sgt. Clay Busby in the film Memphis Belle. Since then, he has enjoyed a very successful film and television career, including voice roles in animated films. Harry Connick Jr. has proved to be equally talented in stage productions, including shows appearing on Broadway. It is incredibly rare for a musician and composer to successfully cross over into film, television, and stage and still be considered a top-notch actor, singer, and musician simultaneously. Harry Connick Jr. has beat the Hollywood odds and become a true multi-talented performer with fans in all sectors of entertainment.

Harry Connick Jr. was born "Joseph Harry Fowler Connick, Jr." on September 11, 1967, to Anita and Harry Connick Sr. in New Orleans. His parents were both lawyers, and his father was the New Orleans District Attorney from 1977-2003, with an incredibly successful career. Anita, Connick's mother, a Louisiana Supreme Court Justice, died of ovarian cancer when he was 13. Most of Harry Connick's albums are dedicated to his mother. His parents owned a record store and encouraged his interest in music. From an early age, Harry was playing piano, eventually winning awards and competitions for his music. When he turned eighteen, he went to New York City to study music (his mother was originally from New York). That same year, Harry Connick appeared in his first major-label instrumental album for Columbia, where he was featured as a member of a jazz trio. His following album, 20, featured his musical and vocal skills, which caught the attention of the Hollywood director Rob Reiner, who was filming the soon-to-be smash hit When Harry Met Sally. Rob Reiner asked Harry Connick to contribute some jazzy classics to the film's score. Connick agreed, and he not only recorded his first big-band recordings, but he also was exposed to nationwide audiences in a film that was an instant hit. The soundtrack for When Harry Met Sally went multi-platinum, and Harry Connick Jr.'s following two albums, released a year later, topped the jazz charts.

Harry Connick continued to showcase his skills as a songwriter, vocalist, musician, and bandleader in the following years as he explored different avenues of sound. In addition to orchestral work, Harry Connick Jr. explored his own New Orleans roots with his music. In the early 90s, he began dabbling in acting, and his talent was truly showcased in the film Hope Floats, starring opposite Sandra Bullock. He would go on to take on a role in Independence Day, one of the highest grossing films of all time. He also created a buzz when he played Lt. Joseph Cable in a remake of the Rogers and Hammerstein classic South Pacific. In addition to singing and acting, Connick joined the judges panel of American Idol in season 13 after previously acting as a mentor to contestants in seasons nine and twelve.
