Harry Connick Jr. was born "Joseph Harry Fowler Connick Jr." on September 11, 1967 to Anita and Harry Connick Sr. inNew Orleans. Harry Connick Jr.'s parents were both lawyers, and his father was the New Orleans District Attorney from 1977-2003, with an incredibly successful career. Anita, Harry Connick Jr.'s mother, a Louisiana Supreme Court Justice, died when he was 13 of ovarian cancer. Most of Harry Connick Jr.'s albums are dedicated to his mother. Harry Jr.'s parents owned a record store, and encouraged his interest in music. From an early age Harry Connick Jr. was playing piano, eventually winning awards and competitions for his music. When he turned eighteen, Harry Connick Jr. went to New York City to study music (his mother was originally from New York). That same year, Connick appeared in his first major-label instrumental album for Columbia, where he was featured as a member of a Jazz trio. His following album, 20 featured his musical and vocal skills, which caught the attention of the Hollywood director Rob Reiner, who was filming the soon-to-be smash hit When Harry Met Sally. Rob Reiner asked Harry Connick Jr. to contribute some jazzy classics to the film's score. Connick agreed and he not only recorded his first big-band recordings, but he also was exposed to nationwide audiences in a film that was an instant hit. The soundtrack for When Harry Met Sally went multi-platinum, and Harry Connick Jr.'s following two albums a year later topped the jazz charts.
