Hedwig and The Angry Inch was originally performed in 1998 Off-Broadway; it was revived at Belasco Theatre in New York, NY, in April 2014. Written by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask, renditions of this rock musical have popped up around the world. Hedwig features music inspired by the 1970s glam rock era (think: David Bowie). Its recent Broadway stint has received much fanfare, and continues to be a top-seller.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch follows the story of Hedwig, the lead-vocalist of a band, who also happens to be transgender. The band performs on stage for much of the play, giving the production an underground concert feel. During the show, Hedwig tells her audience how she went from being Hansel in East Berlin to Hedwig in Kansas, as well as her story thereafter.
Hedwig ends up taking her band and following one of her former collaborators, Tommy Gnosis, on his famous tour. She believes that Tommy is the person she belongs with, and she is determined to be with him again — or else ruin him completely. Mixing humor with a bit of heartbreak, this musical comedy is a quirky depiction of a person who does not belong, and, not only accepts her status as an outsider, but revels in its struggles.
