Idina Menzel gained fame as a singer and actress for her role in the insanely popular musical Wicked, which took over Broadway when it took to the stage in 2003. Now with a Tony Award to her credits, Idina Menzel has a flourishing music career and fans that span the world.
Born in Long Island, New York, in 1971, Menzel began performing at an early age. Making money singing at weddings and bar mitzvahs, Idina Menzel was able to make enough money to attend New York Unversity's Tisch School of the Arts, where she learned to finely tune her skills as a singer, actress and overall performer. It didn't take long for Broadway to take notice. She landed the role of Maureen Johnson in the original cast of Rent, her first professional acting job. She received a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role.
Following her final performance in Rent, Menzel would return to the stage in multiple shows, but it wasn't until 2003 that she once again captured everyone's attention. Landing the role of Elphaba in the musical Wicked in 2003, she quickly gained critical praise. She received the 2004 Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical that year.
Her success on stage led Idina Menzel to success offstage as well. She landed roles in films like Kissing Jessica Stein, Rent and Enchanted. She has also released three studio albums to date: Still I Can't Be Still (1998), Here (2004) and I Stand (2008).
