About In the Heights

In the Heights is one of the hottest new musicals to hit Broadway in a long time. In the Heights tells the story of three days in the life of Washington Heights, a tight knit and vibrant community on the top of Manhattan. The In the Heights official website describes the musical as, "your ticket into a world where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music." Starting off as a hit Off-Broadway musical, it opened on Broadway on March 9, 2008.

In the Heights was created by Lin-Manuel Miranda while he was a student at Connecticut's Wesleyan University. Miranda is responsible for the music and lyrics for In the Heights incredible hip hop infused soundtrack, which after being developed in Connecticut moved to New York's 37 Arts Theatre. Following its opening on the Off-Broadway Stage, In the Heights received rave reviews from news outlets like Entertainment Weekly, New York Times and Variety.

Quiara Alegría Hudes wrote the book for In the Heights, with Andy Blankenbueler lending his skills as the choreographer. Thomas Kail is serving as the director of the award winning play. In the Heights won two Drama Desk Awards while off-Broadway, and in June 2008 won four Tony awards: best musical, best original score, best choreography, and best orchestration.
