About the Indianapolis 500

The Indianapolis 500 is an annual auto race held in Speedway, Indiana, at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Held almost every year since 1911, the Indianapolis 500 consists of 200 laps, totaling for a distance of 500 miles.

Indianapolis 500 History

The Indy 500 was first held in 1911, two years after the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was built. After being home to many small races, the track owners decided to focus on a single, yearly event, with a highly lucrative prize for the race's winner.

The inaugural Indy 500 turned out to be popular, with 80,000 fans in attendance, meaning everyone in the area was looking to buy Indianapolis 500 tickets. Driver Ray Harroun won the first Indianapolis 500.

In 1912, the Indy 500 was limited to 33 drivers, a rule that remains intact today.

Indy 500 Today

Today, the Indianapolis is the most prestigious event of the IndyCar season, and is the world's largest single-day sporting event, with an estimated 300,000 fans in attendance on race day. Taking place on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend since 1974, the race features "Indy Cars," which are open cockpit, open-wheel, single seat race cars. Each car contains a 2.2 L V6, twin-turbocharged engine, which produces between 550 and 700 horsepower. Currently, engines are manufactured by either Chevy or Honda.
