Rapper and producer Jermaine Lamarr Cole, known to most by his stage name, J. Cole was born on a United States Army Base in Frankfurt, West Germany on January 28, 1985. When Cole was eight months old his parents relocated to Fayetteville, North Carolina, where his father subsequently left the family. J. Cole’s mother, aunt, and cousin raised J. Cole and his older brother.

As a child, Cole loved music and began rapping at age 12. Early on, he knew music was something he wanted to pursue as a career. After rapping and studying guitar throughout high school, Cole decided to attend college in New York because he thought he had a better chance of landing a record deal there. Cole attended St. John’s University where he graduated magna cum laude.

Dedicated to make a name for himself, Cole stood outside of Jay-Z’s Roc the Mic Studios in New York for three hours in order to give him a beat he produced. However, his future mentor shunned J. Cole and walked right by him as he left the studio. Not losing his determination, Cole released his first mixtape, The Come Up in 2007. After releasing his second mixtape, The Warm Up in 2009, Cole finally began to receive the recognition he deserved and was featured on Jay-Z’s 2009 album, The Blueprint 3.

In 2010, Cole signed to Jay Z’s Roc Nation record and went on to release his first studio album, Cole World: The Sideline Story in 2011. The album, which featured hits, such as “Can’t Get Enough” and “Work Out” was produced almost entirely by Cole. The album was met with positive reviews and reached the number one spot on the US Billboard 200, the US R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart, and the US Rap Albums chart. The album was also certified Gold by the RIAA.

In 2013, Cole released his second studio album, Born Sinner, which also rose to the top of multiple Billboard charts and was certified Gold by the RIAA. In December 2014, Cole released his third studio album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, which was met with the same positive reviews from music critics as his freshman and sophomore albums. Once again, the album was certified Gold by the RIAA, making that three straight for J. Cole. In 2015, J. Cole embarked on his "Forest Hills Drive Tour" with tour dates across the United States throughout the spring and summer. Big Sean, YG, and Jeremih will be joining J. Cole for each show beginning on July 12.
