From an early age, it was clear what direction Jay Leno would take with his life. In grade school, Leno was the comedian in every class he was in and according to his biography, one of his teachers wrote on his report card that "if Jay spent as much time studying as he does trying to be a comedian, he'd be a big star." When matched to his current career, that statement proved to be true. He is widely regarded as one of the hardest working performers in the business, writing his own monologues each night and scheduling hundreds of appearances each year in places like Las Vegas and Atlantic City. But that hard-working attitude was something Jay Leno used early in his comedy career as well.
While attending Emerson College in Boston, MA, Leno worked the standup circuit and worked as much as he could. After graduation, he moved to Los Angeles and immediately got a job writing for the sitcom Good Times. It wasn't long before Leno started making appearances on late night television, and he eventually signed a deal to become a permanent guest host for the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, a role that he relished. When Carson surprisingly retired in 1992, Leno was chosen as the new host of the show. He has since taken the lead in ratings and hasn't relinquished that spot for many years.
