About Jay-Z & Mary J. Blige

Jay-Z was born Shawn Corey Carter on December 4, 1969 in Brooklyn, New York. He became interested in music as a child, and began writing rhymes and freestyling after his mother bought him a boom box for his birthday. As a teen, Jay-Z met up with small-time rapper Jaz-O, aka Big Jaz, from whom he learned the ins and outs of the record industry.

Unable to land a deal with a major label, Jay-Z decided to form his own record label, Roc-A-Fella Records, on which he released his debut album, Reasonable Doubt in 1996. Jay-Z's next string of albums, which included Vol. 2: Hard Knock Life (1998), The Dynasty: Roc La Familia (2000), The Blueprint (2001), and The Black Album (2003), were each more popular than the last, and catapulted him to the forefront of the rap scene.

In 2003, Jay-Z announced that he was retiring from making new studio albums, and went on to assume the role of president of Def Jam Records. Jay-Z came out of retirement for his "I Declare War" Concert in 2005, and released his comeback album, Kingdom Come in 2006. He released his tenth album, American Gangster, in 2007, which has sold over one million copies worldwide and proven that Jay-Z is still on top of his game.

Mary Jane Blige (also known as MJB and the Queen of Hip Hop Soul) was born on January 11, 1971 in The Bronx, New York. In 1988, Mary J. Blige recorded a cover of Anita Baker's song "Caught Up in the Rapture" at a booth in a local mall, and the tape eventually made its way to the CEO of Uptown Records, Andre Harrell. Mary J. Blige signed with Uptown in 1989, and aided by Sean "Puffy" Combs, began work on her first album, What's the 411 in 1991.

What's the 411 was released in 1992, and established Mary J. Blige as a powerful artist who could bridge the gap between rap and R&B. Her following albums, including Share My World (1997), Mary (1999), The Breakthrough (2005), and her latest, Growing Pains (2007), were majorly successful and enjoyed lengthy runs at the top of the charts. Still riding on the success of her latest album, Mary J. Blige has recently won two 2008 Grammys and collaborated with Chaka Khan and Aretha Franklin.
