Jay-Z was born Shawn Corey Carter on December 4, 1969, in Brooklyn, New York. He became interested in music as a child and began writing rhymes and free-styling after his mother bought him a boom box for his birthday. With an absent father, Carter looked to the streets for financial support. As a teen, Jay-Z met up with small-time rapper Jaz-O, aka Big Jaz, from whom he learned the ins and outs of the record industry. Unable to land a deal with a major label, Jay-Z decided to form his own record label, Roc-A-Fella Records, on which he released his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, in 1996.
Jay-Z's next string of albums, which included Vol. 2: Hard Knock Life (1998), The Dynasty: Roc La Familia (2000), The Blueprint (2001), and The Black Album (2003), were each more popular than the last and catapulted him to the forefront of the rap scene. In 2003, Jay-Z announced his retirement from recording. He assumed the role of president of Def Jam Records but came out of retirement in 2005 for his "I Declare War" concert, and released his comeback album, Kingdom Come, in 2006. He released his 11th album, The Blueprint 3, on September 8, 2009. It went #1 on the charts, proving that Jay-Z is still on the top of his game.
In addition to his studio albums, Jay-Z has released four compilation albums and four collaboration albums. He has been instrumental in launching the careers of fellow R&B artists Kanye West, J. Cole, Rihanna, and Young Jeezy. He has worked with many other artists such as R. Kelly, Ja Rule, DMX, and Linkin Park. In early 2009, Jay-Z announced his departure from Def Jam and the formation of record label Roc Nation.
