In 1962, Jeff was born in Dallas, Texas. At the age of seven, he got a Mortimer Snerd doll and began practicing ventriloquism. He taught himself how to throw his voice by studying books, and eventually created puppets like Jose Jalapeno, a pepper on a stick. As he grew, the stand-up comedian starred in the Broadway show Sugar Babies and performed in local clubs. In 1988, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his career. A few years later, the entertainer guest starred on The Tonight Show and got to sit on the couch next to Johnny Carson. When the group gets on stage, audiences love Jose, Walter, plus Jeff Dunham and Peanut.

As he developed his repertoire, Dunham began appearing on tv shows like Ellen. His new "manager", Sweet Daddy Dee appeared in Arguing with Myself, a 2006 presentation.
