John Mayer was born on October 16, 1977, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Mayer began playing the violin and clarinet as a child and soon became enthralled with pop, jazz, and blues music. After seeing Michael J. Fox play "Johnny Be Goode" in Back to the Future, Mayer became interested in guitar as well. By the time he was sixteen, the aspiring artist was giving concerts in local clubs and bars. John also formed his first band, called Villanova Junction, around this time, but the group did not stay together for very long.
After he released his first full-length album Room for Squares in 2000, Mayer was picked up by Columbia Records. The album earned Mayer a 2003 Grammy award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. That same year, he released his second studio album, Heavier Things. Though the album only sold about half as many copies as its predecessor, it reached #1 on the albums chart and earned John Mayer two more Grammys, both for the song "Daughters." In 2006, Mayer released Continuum, which reached #2, and in 2009 he released Battle Studies, which topped the charts.
Going along with his recording achievements has been popularity in concert, and John Mayer tickets have always been strong sellers. This is partially due to his versatility as a musician, as collaborations with artists like Kanye West, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Alicia Keys, and Fall Out Boy have extended Mayer's star into many musical genres. In 2005, he formed the John Mayer Trio, who played rock and blues music. The Trio opened for the Rolling Stones and have a studio album in the works.
