Juanes is short for Juan Esteban Aristizábal Vásquez. He was born in Colombia and has been an active musician since the late eighties. His style could be described as rock or even heavy metal. He sings exclusively in Spanish, yet managed to be successful in other parts of the world. Juanes' first record, entitled Fijate Bien, was put out in 2000. Following his debut album, Un Dia Normal was released in 2002. His third album, Mi Sangre came out two years later. In 2007, La Vida Es Un Ratico hit the stores.
Juanes is very dedicated to social causes. He actively campaigns against the dangers of land mines and has been honored many times. Sir Paul McCartney and the French Culture Minister are among those acknowledging Juanes' work. He has even been compared to Bono from U2. In addition to his work against land mines, he has also worked on projects with the UN High Commissioner on Refugees and on various AIDS programs. Juanes lyrics often tell the tales of the causes he believes in and the things he has experienced in the process.
