The Kansas City Royals franchise entered Major League Baseball in 1969 as part of a four-team expansion that occured that season. The Royals joined the league along with the San Diego Padres and the now relocated Montreal Expos and Seattle Pilots – now the Washington Nationals and Milwaukee Brewers, respectively. The Royals played there first four seasons in the league at Municipal Stadium before moving to their current home of Kauffman Stadium located at the aptly named One Royal Way in Kansas City. The stadium is best know for it waterfall feature in the outfield, which sees its fair share of home run balls splash down in its waters.
From 1976 to 1985, the Royals were among the elite teams in baseball. In those 10 seasons, the teams qualified for the postseason seven times, including going to the World Series twice, once in 1980 and again in 1985. It was there appearance in 1985 in which the ballclub was able to capture their one and only World Series championship, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games.
Over the past couple decades, the Royals have been trying to rebuild towards that previous glory without much success. Since their World Series victory, the team has yet to be able to get back to the playoffs.
The Royals now rely on players like Eric Hosmer and Alex Gordon to lead them back to the top of the American League Central Division.
