Kathy Griffin was born on November 4, 1960, in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park, Illinois. Griffin is the youngest of five children. Kathy Griffin began her comedy career in the early 1980s while she often attended performances of the improv comedy troup The Groundlings. After a meeting with one of the members of The Groundlings, Phil Hartman, she decided to start taking improv classes and was eventually asked to join the main company. Following her stint with The Groundlings, Kathy Griffin continued to perform stand-up comedy in the Los Angeles alternative comedy scene. She also broke into film briefly and was given a role in the 1991 horror movie The Unborn. Griffin also appeared in a Showtime movie as well as television series such as Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Civil Wars, and more recently, Ugly Betty. She has also appeared in a number of HBO specials including HBO Half Hour Comedy Special and her own featured one-hour special, Kathy Griffin: A Hot Cup of Talk.
Besides doing stand-up comedy and making television and movie appearances, Kathy Griffin has a secondary career doing voiceover work and has been featured in such animated series as Dilbert and Spider-Man. At one time, producers of The View were considering Griffin to fill Rose O'Donnell's spot on the panel, but they eventually decided to replace her with Whoopi Goldberg instead.
Instead of appearing on The View, Kathy Griffin continues to focus on her hit reality show on the cable network Bravo entitled Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List. She partnered with Bravo in 2005 and her show is now in its fourth season. Kathy Griffin recently released a comedy CD called For Your Consideration.
