Keith Urban - Resources

About Keith Urban

Keith Lionel Urban was born in Whangarei, New Zealand, on October 26, 1967. He grew up in Australia, but his parents exposed him to the American culture that would shape his future. Urban's parents especially had a fascination with country music, and the young Urban grew up listening to the likes of Dolly Parton, Glen Campbell and Don Williams. By the age of eight he was already winning country music talent shows and it wasn't long after that that he had stable work in a band. As he developed his style, Urban incorporated influences from Mark Knopfler and Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac. When Keith Urban was 21 years old, he moved from Australia to Nashville to chase his dream of being a country music star.

After he arrived in Nashville, Keith Urban formed the band The Ranch. The three man band consisted of Urban, drummer Peter Clarke and bassist Jerry Flowers. Their live shows created a stir and eventually landed the band a record deal with Capitol Nashville. The band's success did not last long and it disbanded, but Urban had established himself as country music's next big thing. His guitar playing skills landed him gigs playing on records for country music heavyweights like Garth Brooks, the Dixie Chicks, Charlie Daniels, and Emerson Drive. In 2000, he released his self titled debut album which earned Urban both the Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music Top Young Artist awards.

Early success was just the beginning for Keith Urban, as he followed up his debut album with successful work including Golden Road (2002), Be Here (2004), Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing (2006), and the upcoming Defying Gravity. He has sold more than 10 million albums and does not seem to be slowing down. As All Music Guide notes, Urban has played in concert with fellow artists such as Dwight Yoakam, Faith Hill, and Tim McGraw. Only ten years after his solo career began, Urban released a greatest hits album in 2007 that includes his seven number one hits, as well as seven top five singles.
