Legendary country singer and actor Kenny Rogers has spent his near half century long career becoming one of the most influential people in music. From his first album with the band The First Edition to his 2006 album Water & Bridges, Kenny Rogers has built a huge fan base that spans people of all ages.
Kenny Rogers was born on August 21, 1938, in Houston, Texas. Coming from humble beginnings, Rogers spent much of his childhood learning to play the guitar and fiddle. By the time he was a senior in high school, he joined the doo-wop group The Scholars. After the split from them, he joined other musical groups including The Bobby Doyle Trio, the New Christy Minstrels and The First Edition. Kenny Rogers found the most success as a group with The First Edition, releasing thirteen albums from 1967 to 1974. But it wasn't until he left The New Edition that he began his path to becoming the transcendent artist he is. His first solo studio album was Love Lifted Me (1976), which saw moderate success. His follow up album, the self titled Kenny Rogers (1976), helped Kenny Rogers become a household name, reaching #1 on the Billboard Country chart. The album included the single "Lucille" that peaked at #1 on the charts and won Kenny Rogers a Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.
Over the course of his storied career Kenny Rogers has recorded and released twenty-one #1 country singles off of more than thirty albums. Some of his notable albums include The Gambler (1978), which went five times platinum and included the #1 single of the same name. It also won Rogers his second Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. Other notable Kenny Rogers albums include Kenny (1979), Eyes That See in the Dark (1983), She Rides Wild Horses (1999) and Water & Bridges.
Along with being an accomplished singer, Kenny Rogers has successfully found his way into acting as well. He starred in a series of made-for-TV movies based on his song "The Gambler," starring as the lead character Brady Hawkes. He has also made appearances on shows including Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Touched by an Angel and Reno 911!
