At young age Kid Rock found himself listening to rap music and becoming absorbed in the world of rap. Listening to albums like the Beastie Boys' Licensed to Ill (1986) intrigued Kid Rock with the combination of rap and rock, a style that he would attempt to emulate. In 1988, after recording his first demos, he signed a record contract with Jive Records. His first album, Grits Sandwiches for Breakfast (1990), unfortunately fell flat and failed to bring in the success that he and the record label expected. Consequently, Jive Records did not see much of a future for Kid Rock and eventually dropped him from their label.
Kid Rock persevered through these failures and continued to do what he loved. He was picked up by an independent label and released the albums The Polyfuze Method (1993), Fire It Up! (1994), and Early Morning Stoned Pimp (1996). His material eventually got him signed by the major label Atlantic Records. Under his new label, Kid Rock released Devil Without a Cause (1998) which once again did not have much commercial success. After a chance meeting with MTV VJ Carson Daly, Kid Rock began to make multiple appearances on the network, which boosted his record sales. The album eventually sold more than 11 million copies, and Kid Rock had found his ticket to superstardom.
Kid Rock has gone on to release multiple top selling albums including The History of Rock (2000), Cocky (2001), and Rock N Roll Jesus (2007). Touring has always been a huge part of Kid Rock's success and he consistently puts on sold out performances across the country. - Kid Rock had a feature role in the 2001 David Spade comedy Joe Dirt. He played the character Robby, who would constantly bully Joe Dirt.
- Joe C. was Kid Rock's biggest fan, lent much to his early success, and eventually became part of The Twisted Brown Trucker. Due to a disease, Joe C. stood only 3 foot 9 inches tall, but he was perhaps the most popular member of the group. He passed away in 2000, but Kid Rock pays tribute to him at many of his concerts.
