Kings of Leon was formed in 2000 after brothers Jared, Caleb, Nathan, and cousin Matthew moved to Nashville in order pursue a career. The three brothers had spent their childhoods moving from town to town in the South with their parents. Their father, Leon, was a traveling preacher for the United Pentecostal Church, and the brothers were largely home-schooled due to constantly moving. However, the family did at one point spend five years in Jackson, Tennessee. Forbidden to listen to secular music, the brothers did not find their musical influences until they moved to Nashville, where they met songwriter and producer Angelo Petraglia. Along with the addition of Matthew, the band found a life in rock music.
Kings of Leon released their first EP, Holy Roller Novacaine, in February 2003. The success of the EP brought the Kings to the attention of rock fans everywhere, but particularly in Europe. The first regular Kings of Leon album, Youth and Young Manhood, catapulted the quartet into stardom in Europe, but the album did not see as much success in the United States. Following the release of the album, Kings of Leon toured with U2 and The Strokes. The band released their next album, Aha Shake Heartbreak, in October 2004 in the UK and February 2005 in the U.S. This second album continued the trend of expanding the Kings' fan base. It came in at #3 in the UK and #55 on the U.S. Billboard 200. The Kings of Leon spent a long stretch after the release of Heartbreak touring with Pearl Jam and Bob Dylan. In March 2006, the band started work on their third album, and in April 2007 released Because of the Times. For the first time, the Kings saw widespread U.S. success, charting at #25 and selling 70,000 copies in the first week. The album reached #1 in the UK.
Kings of Leon continued on its way to achieving domestic success with its fourth album, Only By The Night, which has released over 300,000 copies in the U.S., a record for the quartet. The album has peaked at #5 in the U.S. and #1 in the U.K. The Kings have cited artists such as Bob Dylan and Neil Young, as well as their own upbringing, as influences in their music. As well as touring with U2 and The Strokes, the Kings have gotten praise from bands and artists such as Bryan Adams, Noel Gallagher of Oasis, Radiohead, and Bob Dylan.
