Kraftwerk is an electronic music band consisting of Ralf Hütter, Fritz Hilpert, Henning Schmitz, and Falk Grieffenhagen. The group was formed in Düsseldorf, Germany in 1970 by Florian Schneider and Ralf Hütter, while they were students at the Robert Scchumann Hochschule, a college for music studies in Düsseldorf.
In the band’s early years, the two worked with six other musicians to record their first three albums as well as put on live performances. Their albums were described as free-form experimental rock and included the use of guitars, drums, bass, flute, violin, and electronic organ. Special effects were used on the instruments after recording in order to distort their sound.
In 1974, the group released their fourth studio album, Autobahn, which was met with great commercial success. The album peaked at number 5 on the Billboard 200 in the United States and was even more popular in Europe. Over the next decade, the band went on to release five more albums.
After Electric Café was released in 1986, Kraftwerk would not release another album until the 2003 release of Tour de France Soundtracks. In 2015, Kraftwerk will be embarking on a 3-D tour, which will take them to cities across North America throughout the fall.
