Lady Gaga was born Joanne Stefani Germanotta on March 20, 1986. According to Gaga's official website, she learned the piano by age four and was writing piano ballads by age thirteen. Four years later Gaga was studying music at the prestigious New York University Tisch School of the Arts. At nineteen she was signed to a recording contract with Def Jam Records but was later released. After Def Jam, she wrote for Akon, Britney Spears, The Pussycat Dolls, and the reconstituted New Kids on the Block.
It was during Gaga's work with Akon that the R&B artist realized that Gaga had a knack for singing, and in early 2008 she was signed with Akon's Kon Live label. She immediately began work on her first album, and released her debut single "Just Dance" in April. The song's rise to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 turned Gaga into an international sensation. Her debut album The Fame was released in August and peaked at #4. It has sold 3 million copies worldwide, and has continued to produce top 10 hit singles like "Poker Face," "LoveGame," and "Paparazzi." One of the album's songs, "Boys Boys Boys," was inspired by both the Mötley Crüe hit "Girls Girls Girls" and the AC/DC song "T.N.T." Lady Gaga's style and look are influenced by David Bowie, Madonna, Michael Jackson, and former Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, and her name is a reference to the Queen song "Radio Ga Ga."
In addition to a hit album, Lady Gaga has been bringing her flamboyant style to the stage, and now she will be going on tour this fall and winter in support of her latest album The Fame Monster.
