Lady Gaga was born Joanne Stefani Germanotta on March 20, 1986. Even before she was famous, Gaga was interested in music. According to Gaga's official website, she learned to play the piano by age four and was writing piano ballads by age thirteen. Four years later Gaga was studying music at the prestigious New York University Tisch School of the Arts. At nineteen she was signed to a recording contract with Def Jam Records but was later released. After Def Jam, she wrote for Akon, Britney Spears, The Pussycat Dolls, and the reconstituted New Kids on the Block.
It was during Gaga's work with Akon that the R&B artist realized that she had a knack for singing, and in early 2008 Gaga was signed with Akon's Kon Live label. She immediately began work on her first album and released her debut single "Just Dance" in April 2008. The song's rise to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 turned Gaga into an international sensation.
Gaga's debut album The Fame was released on August 19, 2008, and peaked at #4. It has sold 8 million copies worldwide and produced top 10 hit singles like "Poker Face," "LoveGame," and "Paparazzi." One of the album's songs, "Boys Boys Boys," was inspired by both the Mötley Crüe hit "Girls Girls Girls" and the AC/DC song "T.N.T." Lady Gaga's style and look are influenced by David Bowie, Madonna, Michael Jackson, and former Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, and her name is a reference to the Queen song "Radio Ga Ga." Her second album, The Fame Monster, was released on November 23, 2009, and her latest, Norn This Way, was released in May 2011.
