When Lenny Kravitz hit the music scene in the late 1980's, he brought with him a love and respect of musical past that shaped his musical future. Drawing inspiration from great artists of the past like Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone and Bob Marley, Lenny Kravitz has become one of the great artists of our time. The four-time Grammy Award winning performer continues to tour in front of sold out audiences from coast to coast.
Leonard Albert Kravitz was born on May 26, 1964, in New York City. His parents were both part of the entertainment business; his mother Roxie Roker was made famous for her role on the television show "The Jeffersons" and his father Sy Kravitz was an NBC TV news producer. His love of music began as he grew up listening to Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith and Jimi Hendrix. It was clear early on that Lenny Kravitz was going to be a superstar.
His first album, Let Love Rule (1989), was a modest success but never got Lenny Kravitz the success in the US that he had hoped for. Mama Said (1991) was the album that followed for him and was his first to reach the top 40 chart, but his greatest success was still yet to come. In 1993, he released his third album overall, Are You Gonna Go My Way, which is considered by many to be the quintessential Lenny Kravitz album. The album was a huge hit and catapulted Lenny Kravitz from opening act to headliner.
His following albums were Circus (1995), 5 (1998), Lenny (2001) and Baptism (2004). All albums were commercial successes and earned Lenny Kravitz success during award season as well. Starting in 1999, with the Song "Fly Away" off of the album 5, Lenny Kravitz won four consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
