Les Miserables is one of the best-known musicals of our time. Often referred to by the colloquial name "Les Miz," the musical was written by Claude-Michel Schonberg and is based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo.
Surprisingly, the show first opened to a less-than-positive reception in London during the fall of 1985. Many critics panned the musical and literary scholars condemned the show for trivializing a classic novel by making it into a musical. However, audiences loved the show and the three-month engagement sold out. The positive public opinion prompted producers of Les Miserables to move the show to Broadway.
Les Miserables opened at The Broadway Theatre on March 12, 1987, and was instantly a success. The same year it opened on Broadway, the musical was nominated for twelve Tony Awards and won eight of those awards, including one for Best Musical. The show would go on to have the third longest run on Broadway, playing for sixteen years and 6,680 performances.
After closing on Broadway in May of 2003, Les Miserables was brought back to the Great White Way for a twenty-month revival in 2006. The show celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2010 with a short run in London’s West End and a sold-out concert held at The O2. The 25th Anniversary Concert featured performers from the original 1985 cast, the 2010 London cast, and the international tour and was later shown live in theatres across the world.
Keeping up with the 25th Anniversary celebration, Les Miserables hit the road for an international tour and a US tour. The US tour is expected to run through 2013, but don’t miss your chance to see this classic; find Les Miserables tickets today!
Les Miserables tells the story of Jean Valjean, a man imprisoned for nineteen years for stealing bread for his starving family and then trying to escape. The musical opens on the day of Valjean’s release from prison and follows him as he attempts to live a better life after being given a second chance by a merciful bishop. Set against the backdrop of an unstable 19th century France, the musical is a story about people struggling for redemption and revolution and should not be missed.
