In 1994, Disney released a new animated movie. Featuring music by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice, and African rhythms by Lebo M, a stage adaptation of The Lion King opened in Minneapolis, MN, in the summer of 1997 at the Orpheum Theatre. A few months later, Julie Taymor directed the Broadway hit at the New Amsterdam Theater. The musical won several Tony Awards, including Best Choreography, and included a wildebeest stampede, puppetry, and animal characters.

When the curtain rises, Rafiki the mandrill helps King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi present their son, Simba the baby lion. Everyone at Pride Rock is happy about the heir to the throne except for Scar, Mufasa's brother. Plotting to rule the kingdom, Uncle Scar chases Simba away from home. In the jungle, Timon the meerkat and Pumbaa the warthog invite the cub to join their carefree "Hakuna Matata" life. Will he ever see Nala, his childhood friend, again?
