In 1994, Disney released a new animated movie. Featuring music by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice, and African rhythms by Lebo M, a stage adaptation of The Lion King opened in Minneapolis, MN, in the summer of 1997 at the Orpheum Theatre. A few months later, Julie Taymor directed the Broadway hit at the New Amsterdam Theater. The musical won several Tony Awards, including Best Choreography, and included a wildebeest stampede, puppetry, and animal characters.

When the curtain rises, Rafiki the mandrill helps King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi present their son, Simba the baby lion.
