About The Little Mermaid
The story of The Little Mermaid dates back to 1837, when Hans Christian Andersen wrote the original version of this classic tale. In 1989, Disney adapted The Little Mermaid to an animated film, which was arguably one of Disney's most successful films and won Academy, Golden Globe, and Grammy Awards. The theatrical production of The Little Mermaid was subsequently based on the animated film version of the tale, with book by Doug Wright, music by Alan Menken, and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater.
The Little Mermaid had a six week tryout in Denver, CO at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts' Ellie Caulkins Opera House, which began on July 26, 2007. Every single Little Mermaid ticket for the entire run was sold out. The Little Mermaid moved to Broadway in November of 2007, and officially opened at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater on January 10, 2008.
The Little Mermaid tells the story of the young mermaid, Ariel, who is fascinated with the human world and has fallen in love with the human Prince Eric. Ariel goes to the evil sea witch, Ursula, who is sister to Ariel's father, King Triton. Ursula promises to turn Ariel into a human for three days, in exchange for her voice. If Ariel can obtain a kiss of true love from Prince Eric within the three days, she can remain human forever. If not, she will become Ursula's slave.
The Broadway production of The Little Mermaid differs slightly from the original Disney film version, but still contains all of the beloved songs like "Under the Sea," "Part of Your World," and "Kiss The Girl," as well as ten new songs and additional lyrics. The actors in this production wear shoes with wheels on them in order to simulate underwater movement, and the set is translucent and bathed in blue light in order to enhance the underwater feel of the show.
