When translated from Spanish, "Los Angeles" means "The Angels," so it is only fitting that a Major League Baseball team in LA has taken that name. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, formerly known as just the Anaheim Angels, joined the American League in 1961 and immediately established itself as an elite baseball franchise. For many years before the Angels ever took the field, baseball in Los Angeles was only a fantasy, not a reality. The initial talks were to take an existing team and to move them to the west coast, but each time the talks would end up with everyone standing pat. In their first-ever World Series, the Angels were pitted against slugger Barry Bonds and the San Francisco Giants. In the years since, the team has become one of the most formidable franchises in the American League, although they have yet to cinch another World Series title.
