The Los Angeles Lakers enter the new season in the envious position of being the defending NBA Champions, after capturing the title convincingly during last season NBA Finals. The only difference now for Kobe and company, is that now they are the hunted instead of the hunters.

Lamar Odom resigned with Lakers in the offseason and is a match-up nightmare off the bench, but unfortunately, Odom has been inconsistent over his career which some have attributed to a candy "addiction". Head coach Phil Jackson was able to reign in Dennis Rodman in his time in Chicago, and is hoping for a repeat performance with Artest. If successful, Artest could be the key to a Lakers repeat. Along with center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the team earned the moniker 'Showtime Lakers' and would become the team of the 1980's. From 1980 to 1988, they won 6 NBA titles, 3 of them against Celtics.

The Lakers have never fallen far off of the NBA contender radar, but after Magic Johnson retired, they needed a big change. That big change turned out to truly be big, 7 foot 300+ lb center Shaquille O'Neal joined the Lakers in 1996 and that same year the team traded for the draft rights of Kobe Bryant.
