Los Angeles Philharmonic - Resources

About the Los Angeles Philharmonic

The Los Angeles Philharmonic was founded in 1919 by multi-millionaire William Andrews Clark, Jr. A part-time musician himself, Clark, Jr., was looking to establish Los Angeles' first permanent symphony orchestra. He gathered some of the best musicians from symphonies on the east coast as well as local musicians from the short-lived Los Angeles Symphony. The Los Angeles Philharmonic was born on October 13, 1919, when the 94 musicians that comprised the philharmonic met for their first rehearsal. It took only eleven days for the group to make its debut in Los Angeles in front of 2,400 spectators.

Now more than 90 years later, the Los Angeles Philharmonic is still going strong. According to the Los Angeles Philharmonic website, the classical orchestra sees over one million spectators come through the turnstiles each year. It plays at Los Angeles' Walt Disney Concert Hall for 30-week engagements each year that span from October through June. The orchestra then takes up residency at the Hollywood Bowl during the summer months for Music Under the Stars.
