Finally: two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks, star of such films as "Forrest Gump," "A League of Their Own," "You’ve Got Mail," and the "Toy Story" saga, makes his Broadway debut in Lucky Guy. Written by the late Nora Ephron, Lucky Guy is just one of Ephron’s beloved stories, which include "When Harry Met Sally," "Sleepless in Seattle" (starring Tom Hanks), and "Julie & Julia." George C. Wolfe (The Normal Heart, Angels in America) will direct.
New York Daily News reporter Mike McAlary began his 12-year career with the newspaper working the police beat. Much of what McAlary went on to do involved police work, including his 1988 book, Buddy Boys, about corrupt police in New York's 77th Precinct, his writing contributions to the "Copland" script (starring Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro), and a 1990 piece in which McAlary was granted an interview with then-famed gang leader Lefty. Four years after he spoke with Lefty, the former gang leader had turned his life around — he was a decorated soldier, family man, and college student, which he attributed to McAlary’s previous article.
Considering his immersion into the police beat, it’s fitting, then, that McAlary's 1998 Pulitzer Prize is for his coverage the New York City police brutalization of Abner Louima, a Haitian who was assaulted outside a Brooklyn nightclub in 1997. Lucky Guy chronicles the award-winning journalist’s rise to fame, including his struggles with a libel suit that nearly ruins his career, in this biography. Relive McAlary’s life — and catch Tom Hanks in his first-ever Broadway appearance — with Lucky Guy tickets.
