Luis Miguel is a Latin crooner, often compared with Frank Sinatra because of his effect on the ladies and his successful music career. AOL Music calls Luis Miguel "the most popular performer in Latin America" since 1990, and for good reason! Luis Miguel tickets have sold out in Latin America and the United States for over a decade, and Luis Miguel is still as powerful as ever in his performances. According to IMDb, Luis Miguel's performances " ranked him as #2 in the world with Performance and Amusement magazines for having sold the most tickets for consecutive dates at one venue (Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City, 1997)."
Luis Miguel was born on April 19, 1970 in Puerto Rico to a Mexican musician and an Italian actress. Although Luis Miguel was born in Puerto Rico, he was raised in Mexico and has two younger brothers, Sergio and Alejandro. Luis Miguel considers himself "100% Mexican", and his music reflects his Mexican upbringing and his father's musical influence. Luis Miguel's mother disappeared in 1987 and her to this day, her whereabouts are unknown. This mystery has been one of Latin America's most researched topics and theories range from foul play to the Italian actress running out on Luis Miguel and his family. In spite of the mystery, People magazine's Spanish language publication, People en Espanol writes that Luis Miguel still wants to see his mother again: "he still dreams of reuniting with his mother, Marcela Basteri, whom he hasn't seen in 18 years. 'I want to say to my mother, wherever she is, that we miss her very much and love her,' he said, sending his mother a Mother's Day greeting." There is little information about Luis Miguel's early family life. At the very young age of 11, Luis Miguel began what would become a very long-lived recording career. Luis Miguel's father acted as his manager and influenced Luis Miguel to watch and learn from rock and roll legend, Elvis Presley. Luis Miguel's first album was released in 1981 in Mexico and was entitled 1+1=2 Enamorados (1+1=2 In Love). Shortly after the release of his first album, Luis Miguel began touring Latin America and performed in countries such as Columbia, Venezuela, Chile, and Argentina. Over the next few years, Luis Miguel had won several awards for his music and was even given the opportunity to appear in a couple movies.
After having signed with Warner Records in 1987, Luis Miguel recorded the album, Un Hombre Busca Una Mujer, which was released in 1988. It was this album and the breakthrough single, "La Incondicional", which would bring fame and popularity to Luis Miguel throughout Latin America. In 1991, at 20 years old, Luis Miguel recorded the album 20 Años which was the album that transformed him from a child performer to a respected adult performer. At this point, Luis Miguel became such a sensation that he was selling out concerts all over Mexico and throughout the rest of Latin America. Luis Miguel tickets were a hot commodity at the time, and when Luis Miguel performs now, tickets can still be hard to come by! The greatest album recorded by Luis Miguel, which was released shortly after 20 Años, was entitled Romance. Romance became the best-selling Spanish album of all time and was even the first Spanish album by a male performer to reach platinum status in the US.
